🚨 I recently had the opportunity to share insights with Sheena Butler-Young at The Business of Fashion about the challenges facing Black beauty entrepreneurs and the broader implications for the industry. Here’s what I emphasized:🔑 Structural Inequities:Black beauty entrepreneurs face systemic hurdles in accessing funding and building retail partnerships. These barriers limit their ability to scale and innovate, keeping their businesses at a disadvantage in an industry where Black consumers contribute significantly to overall revenue.💡 Unmet Consumer Needs:Black consumers often find their needs overlooked by mainstream brands, creating a gap between what the market offers and what diverse consumers truly need. This disconnect not only alienates a substantial customer base but perpetuates a cycle where Black-owned brands struggle to thrive.🌍 A Threat to the Entire Industry:These challenges aren’t just about Black-owned businesses—they highlight a missed opportunity for the entire beauty sector. A lack of diversity and inclusivity creates a homogeneous market, stifling innovation and alienating diverse consumers. Supporting Black beauty brands isn’t just an equity issue; it’s essential for the industry’s growth and sustainability.Investing in Black-owned brands is not just for representation but for a future of true innovation and inclusivity.Let’s ensure that Black-owned beauty brands are not only visible but also viable. 💪🏾https://lnkd.in/erzyyPRy#BlackBeauty #EquityInBeauty #Innovation #TheBlackBeautyClub #BusinessOfFashion

Did you know? Black women and girls are over-exposed to and under-protected from toxic chemicals in the beauty and personal care products they use every day. Below are just a few ways these toxic chemicals negatively effect our our bodies and the environment.😵💫🙄🤦🏽♀️Disproportionate Chemical Exposure➡️Endocrine Disruptors: Products marketed to Black women often contain higher levels of endocrine disruptors like parabens, phthalates, and UV filters such as benzophenone-3. These chemicals can mimic hormones in the body, leading to hormonal imbalances and associated health issues. Black women have been found to have higher levels of these chemicals in their bodies compared to white women Health Dangers: ➡️Reproductive Health: Endocrine disruptors are linked to reproductive health problems, including infertility, preterm birth, and gestational diabetes. Studies have shown that early onset of puberty, associated with increased cancer risks, is more common in girls exposed to these chemicals ➡️Cancer: Formaldehyde, a known human carcinogen found in many hair straightening and smoothing products, poses significant cancer risks. The exposure to such chemicals is more prevalent among Black women due to the types of products they are marketed and use Regulatory Gaps➡️Lack of Oversight; The U.S. has significantly fewer banned chemicals in cosmetics compared to the European Union. The FDA has limited authority to regulate cosmetic products, and many harmful substances remain unregulated. This regulatory gap contributes to the higher exposure and associated health risks faced by Black women [oai_citation:6,Black Women Face Disproportionate Risks From Largely Unregulated Toxic Substances in Beauty and Personal Care Products➡️Legislative Efforts: Recent legislative efforts like the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act (MoCRA) aim to expand the FDA’s authority to regulate the beauty industry. However, these efforts do not yet include comprehensive bans or mandatory consumer notifications for the most toxic substances.Socioeconomic Factors➡️Economic Disparities: Black women spend more on beauty products than white women, often due to societal pressures to conform to Eurocentric beauty standards. This increased expenditure compounds the economic disparities they already face, as Black women typically earn less than their white counterparts➡️Access to Safe Products: Safe, chemical-free products are often less accessible and more expensive. Black women have limited options when it comes to choosing safer beauty products, which further exacerbates their exposure to harmful chemicals.{Be sure to follow us across all social media platforms @ Clean Beauty Coalition for more information and updates}#cleanbeautycoalition #cleanbeauty #enviormentaljustice #wellness #nontoxicbeauty #beautyjustice #cleanersaferbeautyforall #tiktok

“Excellent interview discussing the dangers of toxic chemical relaxers and their affect on the health of black women and children.”1. Health Risks: -Hormone Disruption: Chemical relaxers often contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) like phthalates and parabens. These EDCs can interfere with the body's hormone systems, leading to issues such as early puberty, infertility, and other reproductive health problems. - Cancer Risks: Studies have shown a correlation between the use of chemical relaxers and increased risks of uterine fibroids and cancers such as uterine and breast cancer. A 2019 study published in the International Journal of Cancer found that women who frequently used hair relaxers had a higher risk of developing breast cancer. - Respiratory Issues: Inhalation of fumes from relaxers containing formaldehyde, often used in Brazilian blowout treatments, can cause respiratory problems, asthma, and other lung issues.2. Hair and Scalp Damage: - Scalp Burns and Irritation: Sodium hydroxide (lye) relaxers can cause severe burns and irritation if they come into contact with the skin. Even "no-lye" relaxers, which use calcium hydroxide, can cause scalp dryness and damage over time. -Permanent Hair Loss: Prolonged use of relaxers can cause traction alopecia, a form of hair loss due to damage to the hair follicles, which can be permanent.3. Toxic Ingredients: - Sodium Hydroxide: Found in many traditional relaxers, it is a highly caustic substance that can cause chemical burns and permanent scalp and skin damage. - Guanidine Hydroxide: Often found in "no-lye" relaxers, it can cause scalp irritation and hair damage similar to sodium hydroxide. - Formaldehyde: Used in some straightening treatments, formaldehyde is a known carcinogen. Long-term exposure to formaldehyde can cause respiratory issues and increase cancer risk.4. Impact on Children: -Developmental Concerns: The endocrine-disrupting chemicals in relaxers can affect children's development, potentially leading to hormonal imbalances and related health issues later in life. - Psychological Impact: Early exposure to relaxers can also contribute to negative self-image and pressure to conform to certain beauty standards, impacting mental health and self-esteem.5. Regulatory Concerns: - Lack of Regulation: The beauty industry in the United States is not as heavily regulated as in other countries. Many harmful chemicals in hair products are not banned or adequately controlled, allowing manufacturers to use them freely. - Disparities in Product Safety: Products marketed to Black women often contain higher levels of harmful chemicals compared to those marketed to other demographics, reflecting systemic inequities in product safety standards.#environmentaljustice #blackwomenshealth #hairrelaxer #toxicchemicals #safecosmetics #cleanbeautycoalition https://lnkd.in/efE_uS6R

"The price of beauty should never be Black women's health." — Level UpHair care companies profit from racialized beauty standards. But what are the potential health risks of "beauty products" such as relaxers for Black women? As thousands of hair relaxer lawsuits play out in the U.S., I looked at the chemicals in hair straighteners sold here and in some African countries where sales of the products are growing. Thanks to The Examination, a global health news organization, and The Guardian global development desk for their support in producing this story and Agatha Gichana at Kenya's Nation Media and Blessing Oladunjoye Nigeria's BO News for reporting contributions.https://lnkd.in/gQ53T2Gc

𝑫𝒊𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘?Beauty products marketed to Black women often contain the most toxic ingredients used by the cosmetics industry, including chemicals linked to breast and ovarian cancer, uterine fibroids, reproductive harm, early puberty in young girls and more. This toxic exposure is of particular concern to Black women because they purchase and use more beauty products than any other demographic - spending more than $7.5 billion dollars on beauty products a year and nine times more on hair productsthe average consumer. Unfortunately, Black women also face many health disparities, including the highest breast cancer mortality rate of any racial or ethnic group in the Unite States.💕💕🌹{Be sure to follow us across all social media platforms @ Clean Beauty Coalition for more information and updates}#cleanbeautycoalition #cleanbeauty #enviormentaljustice #wellness #nontoxicbeauty #beautyjustice #cleanersaferbeautyforall #tiktok
